July 5, 2019 Logrono to Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Late start today, as I was taking the bus to Santo Domingo. The ride was short and pleasant. The countryside is rural, and mostly wheat fields.

When I arrived in Santo Domingo, i immediately found a grocery store and picked up some water. Then i looked for my Pension. When i found it, it was across a street where there were many restuarants and a gazebo. Lots of trees.

My room was amazing. It has two twins, a sink, and a tv. It also had a balcony. I put my things down and headed to see the sites.

The story of Santo Domingo is that it is named after a hermit who worked very hard to improve the infrastructure for the pilgrims who passed through.

There is also a story of a son who fell in love with a rich girl. She rejected his advances and planted some coins on him and claimed he had been robbed. He was captured and hanged. When his parents came to collect his body, they found he was still alive. They cut him down and went to the general to tell him that the man was alive. The general scoffed and said he was as dead as the chicken he was roasting. Immediately the chickens came to life.

This church keeps this story alive by keeping a pair of chickens always on display in the church.

I really liked this little town. It was alive, very different from many of the others I have been through. That night, as i was enjoying my private room, i heard some loud music. I looked out the balcony, and to my amazement, the was a full Orchestra. They played “March of the “Troubadors”, “O Sole Mio”, and a whole host of the other music. It was otherworldly, and I loved it. Also love the .80cent glass of wine!
